March 19, 2026 Emory, CNU advance to semifinals Emory defeated Illinois Wesleyan on a three-pointer with 1.4 seconds to go, while Christopher Newport went on a hot streak in the second half, then had to hold off St. Thomas (Texas) to return to the Division III men’s basketball national semifinals.
March 13, 2026 Christopher Newport Advances to Elite Eight Following 59-57 Road Victory over Randolph-Macon College Christopher Newport University surged to a 14-point halftime lead Friday night, and then held off the fourth-ranked Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon College, 59-57, at a jam-packed Crenshaw Gymnasium. The victory in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament improved the Captains record to 24-5 and John Krikorian's team will now advance to the Elite Eight of the 64-team tourney. CNU will play the third-ranked Celts of the University of St. Thomas (Texas) on Thursday in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The Captains, ranked 15th in the country, were led by junior big man Ethan Ward, who scored 14 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Junior Toa Hollenbeck (13) and senior Collin Hines (12) also reached double figures in scoring as the Captains ended the Yellow Jackets season with a 27-4 record and handed R-MC its first home loss of the season after 15 consecutive victories.

March 7, 2026 Captains Advance to Sweet 16 With 90-61 Home NCAA Victory over Washington & Jefferson Christopher Newport University never trailed Saturday night as the 15th-ranked Captains Sailed into the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament with a 90-61 home victory over Washington & Jefferson College. The Captains improved to 23-5 with the victory at the Freeman Center that propels the Captains into the Sweet 16 for the 12th time in program history, and the sixth time in the last seven tournaments. Junior Toa Hollenbeck led the Captains with an 18-point scoring effort, while senior Collin Hines registered a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Ethan Ward also reached double figures in scoring with 13 points, as the Captains held W&J to 36 percent shooting for the night.
March 6, 2026 Four Captains Score in Double Figures as 15th-Ranked Christopher Newport Advances in NCAA Play over Stevens Christopher Newport University broke open a close game in the second half Friday night, and held off Stevens Institute of Technology, 75-62, in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament at the Freeman Center. Junior Toa Hollenbeck led the way by scoring 21 points as the Captains improved to 22-5 on the season. The Captains will play the Presidents of Washington & Jefferson College Saturday in the second round of the tournament. Tip off time is set for 5:45 p.m. at the Freeman Center. February 27, 2026 Christopher Newport Advances to C2C Title Game Thanks to Comeback and OT Victory Christopher Newport University scored the final five points of regulation Friday night to force overtime, and then held off UC Santa Cruz at West Field House, 77-74, in the semifinals of the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Tournament. The Captains, ranked tenth in the nation, improved to 21-4 and will play the University of Mary Washington Saturday night at 8:00 p.m. at KP Arena for the title. Mary Washington, ranked seventh in the country, ousted Salisbury in the first semifinal on Friday, 55-46, to improve to 23-3 on the season. Christopher Newport trailed for most of the game Friday, and was looking at a five-point deficit, 64-59, with just 1:23 remaining in the second half. The Captains rallied as junior Toa Hollenbeck scored the final seven CNU points of regulation to pull the Captains into a 66-66 tie after 40 minutes. Hollenbeck evened the game on a driving layup while drawing a foul with 11 seconds remaining, and his free throw to complete the three-point play forced extra time. Hollenbeck and junior Zyir Baskerville then each added five more points in the OT as the Captains out-scored the Slugs, 11-8, in the extra period to advance to the title game.
